Are electronic cigarettes really ‘smoking 2.0′

Article by Michael Kitt

Could Electronic Cigarettes ever really help you quit smoking and what exactly are they anyway?

Although still relatively unheard of, there are a growing number of users of what is quickly becoming known as smoking 2.0. A simple Google search for the term ‘electronic cigarette’ returns over 5.3 million results which is impressive being as electronic cigarettes have only been available for 4 years.

The electronic cigarette was conceived as a ‘healthy replacement’ for smoking and certainly has the potential to deliver once official medical testing has been performed. It is a unique device in its own right which will allow smokers to ‘smoke, without actually smoking’.

How is that possible? The electronic cigarette or ‘ecigarette’ looks at smoking differently than ‘sparking one up’, instead it looks at smoking in terms of nicotine addiction and goes further than traditional nicotine replacement therapies by providing much more of a psychological experience to the user. Now in a fourth generation, electronic cigarettes have become much more user friendly than earlier versions which perhaps were a little too oversized to encourage a mass market appeal. Some of the more advanced electronic cigarettes like NUCIG and Cigstar look and feel exactly like a normal cigarette, they taste like ‘clean tobacco’ and the smoke completes the users experience with a satisfying hit on the throat and lungs which cannot be achieved by more traditional Nicotine Replacement Therapies.

So are electronic cigarettes all smoke and mirrors or can they really, potentially save the NHS billions every year?

An electronic cigarette is comprised of a rechargeable battery, an atomizer and a replaceable nicotine cartridge. The user just draws on the e-cigarette as they normally would a cigarette and the experience is as close as possible without actually being a cigarette. Having a replaceable nicotine cartridge proves to be very useful as cartridges are available in different nicotine strengths which permits the user to drop the nicotine content of their electronic cigarette gradually as they see fit and can even get down to zero nicotine if required.During these tough financial times the leading UK website of electronic cigarettes (www.cheap-electronic-cigarettes.co.uk) has shown that a 20 a day smoker can easily save over £1100 a year by switching to electronic cigarettes. Now that is something everyone can benefit from.

Even though electronic cigarettes appear to be much healthier on the surface, if you dig a little deeper you discover a whole host of side benefits which are not so apparent, the big one being that electronic cigarettes do not breach the smoking ban! As there is no burning or ignition you can use them in your office, pubs, clubs, restaurants and I have even seen some be sold on Ryanair and Easyjet!Non smokers can also benefit, because there is no burning there is no real smell so regular electronic cigarette users often find that once the switch is made, they no longer smell which for a non smoking partner is worth more that you can imagine. The users often also report that they get their sense of taste and smell back and regularly report a general increase in energy and breathing capacity.

Upon reflection, electronic cigarettes do have a lot of benefits but at present cannot be promoted as a Nicotine Replacement Therapy until full testing has been done by the MHRA and NHS to confirm they comply with their safety regulations but once that is complete, you can expect to see the popularity of ecigarettes explode into the mainstream.

In my opinion I’d encourage anyone who already smokes to consider e-smoking as an alternative to a habit which is known to carry very high risks of disease (a 50/50 chance of it killing you, basically). The cost of e-smoking is significantly less too but even if it did cost the same as normal smoking, it’s very probable that, in my opinion, it’s going to vastly reduce the risk to the user and those around them, and no matter what school of logic you subscribe to, that’s got to be a good thing.
